Today marks the last days of Endometriosis Awareness Month.
A fantastic initiative to spread the word about a debilitating condition that affects the quality of life and fertility of 1 in 9 Australian AFAB.
The suffering of endometriosis is often done in silence, individuals thinking that what they are experiencing is “normal”. Due to the complex and varied presentation combined with unfortunately previously poor awareness among healthcare providers, on average it takes 7 years from first symptoms until a diagnosis of endometriosis is made.
This month has hopefully educated and empowered individuals to advocate for their own health and seek medical attention especially when it comes to reproductive health.
Additionally, the hope is that with increased awareness and education amongst not only healthcare providers but also the general public, we can start seeing a reduction in time to diagnosis and an improvement in the quality of life of these 1 in 9 Australians.
To do my part I thought I would just address some of the most common myths and misconceptions I hear about this condition, so take a look, and if you think or any of your loved ones might be potentially suffering from endometriosis please reach out to your GP, help is just an appointment away.
